The first step was to validate the installation aboard the ship and undertake tests with the launch tubes empty before firing a torpedo – whose warhead had been replaced with sensors – in realistic conditions. “This first torpedo firing is an important step in the program: it confirms the ship's anti-submarine warfare capacity and demonstrates the capacities of the combat system developed and manufactured by DCNS,” says Vincent Martinot-Lagarde, FREMM program director at DCNS. The Aquitaine has four launch tubes and will embark 19 lightweight torpedoes such as the MU90. Previous tests earlier this year proved the compatibility between the Cayman helicopter (NH90), which has advanced anti-submarine detection and neutralization capacities, and the FREMM.
