The unarmed Tornado on a training flight from Taktischer Luftwaffengeschwader (Tactical Air Force Squadron) 33 in Büchel crashed five kilometers northeast of its base into the heavily forested Eifel region of western Germany at 21:20 CET on 16 January.

One of the two crew members who ejected was slightly injured and both received medical treatment at the Bundeswehr hospital in Koblenz, from where they have since been released. The crash occurred in an uninhabited area but forced the closure of the A48 autobahn going through it.
