Aviation Week will evaluate a unique cockpit upgrade program for Bombardier Dash 8 Q100/200/300 turboprops that is breathing new life into the venerable regional airliner and special missions platform. Iceland is an early adopter of the upgrade, with domestic regional carrier Air Iceland and the Icelandic Coast Guard both taking advantages of the capabilities in daily operations.
Senior Avionics and Safety Editor, John Croft, flew with Air Iceland in an upgraded Q200, one of two in the domestic airline’s fleet, to evaluate the next-generation capabilities on a trip to Isafjordur in the north of the island nation, an airport with steep mountain slopes on three sides.
We also will report on changes to the Icelandic Coast Guard’s operating model for its upgraded Q300 in a tough global economic climate, particularly in Europe. Aviation Week saw those capabilities in full detail during a rare glimpse into the coast guard’s world during an 1,800nm flight from home base in Reykjavik to Moncton, Canada in late December.
