Boeing Commercial Airplanes Jim Albaugh says Boeing may make the 787-10 available in 2016. Although the timetable is not yet fixed he says this fits in with the schedule for developing the initial 787-9 stretch which will be delivered in the last quarter od 2013. "We"re going to complete the -9 design and delivery and roll the design team from the -9 to the -10.
He adds that Boeing will not be hurried in its decision over whether to re-engine the 737 or replace it with an all-new single aisle aircraft. The decision will be taken "in a disciplined fashion' as this is a product which will be "not just for the next decade but for the next 50 years."
Albaugh also confirms that Alenia has been told that they have "an opportunity" to be a second source on production of the horizontal stabilizer for the 787-9. "But thee are no guarantees,' he adds. The stabilizer for the stretch is being taken in house by Boeing after several design and production issues with the original unit on the -8.
