Airbus next week will start trials of Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan on the A340-600. The demonstration program just started today, although power was still at idle.
Here's the first glimpses of the installation:
The flight test program, which could start already next week, is expected to run about 75 hours.
What comes then is unclear. Airbus has indicated it would consider putting the GTF on the A320, if customer demand is there.
Of course, even if the go-ahead is given soon, a GTFed A320 would probably not emerge quickly. So is there really enough time to market and sell enough of them before the A320 replacement emerges late next decade?
