In an effort to decrease its fuel consumption and carbon emissions, AirAsia, arguably one of the most lauded low-cost carriers in the world, has enlisted GE Aviation to identify and track operational functions that impact fuel usage. (AirAsia ranked 1st in Aviation Week's 2012 Top-Performing Airline study.)

AirAsia operates a fairly young fleet and is profitable, but GE Aviation's Fuel and Carbon Solutions product "provides a highly sophisticated IT platform to allow our team to make accurate comparisons of the effectiveness of our operational procedures with real fuel and emissions data," states Bo Lingam, AirAsia's COO.

As part of the package, GE Aviation will help AirAsia identify and prioritize improvements, then assist with measuring and validating the savings.

Really using metrics to track operational functions is so vital these days. Many organizations say they are working on Lean or other such efficiencies--but this strikes me as an example of AirAsia really doing it.
