  • Behind the Aeromexico Order
Posted by Lee Ann Tegtmeier 8:26 AM on Jul 26, 2012

Aeromexico's order to 100 aircraft, worth $11 billion at list prices (so maybe $5.5 billion actually?), interests me in many respects.

    1. Aeromexico says it wants to shift its fleet from being leased to being owned, which is the opposite of what many other carriers are doing.

    2. 100 aircraft is an awfully big purchase. Fleet renewal and capacity/route expansion are the obvious answers, but is there more to this?

    3. Is this order in any way a preemptive strike against a potential reemergence of Mexicana?

Thoughts? I'd love to hear your opinions.
