  • Iraq ATC handed over to... Iraqis
Posted by Adrian Schofield 7:06 PM on Sep 07, 2007

Big milestone in the re-establishment of Iraq's air traffic control organization..... on Aug. 30 a large chunk of airspace in central Iraq was handed over from the U.S. Air Force to Iraqi controllers, according to an FAA employee newsletter. This marks the first time since 1993 that Iraq has had active civilian radar control.

The transfer occurred at the Baghdad Area Control Center, and several FAA employees have assisted in the transition process. The FAA's Kathryn Vernon is currently serving as deputy transportation counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, and deputy senior consultant for aviation affairs in the Iraq Reconstrcution Management Office.
