At year’s end, I like to review all the interesting pictures and video that I have stored on the SD card in my Nikon D3100 camera (and failed to download during the year). Today’s find is a video of two Honeywell test pilots taking off in the company’s Convair CV580 (N580HW) flight test aircraft from Runway 19L at the Dulles International Airport (KIAD) on July 31, 2012. I was in lucky enough to be in the jump seat. The point of the flight was to show off new functions of Honeywell’s RDR4000 on board weather radar. Click HERE for an article in Aviation Week on the system. As such, we headed south to South Carolina to find some large thunderboomers. One of the new features of the highly automated radar is turbulence finder that allowed us to fly safely through corridors of smooth air between and around the cells, obviously a feature of value to airlines and the people who ride in them. Built in 1952 as a CV340-3 and delivered to United Airlines as N73101, the twin turboprop was upgraded to a CV580 in the late 1960s, and is now the oldest of the series still flying. Enjoy.
