  • AFA Fights For Yet Another Major Group Of Members
Posted by Jennifer Michels 8:39 PM on Apr 26, 2011

The Association of Flight Attendants has another chance to add large numbers of members to its ranks, this time at the merged United Continental.

The National Mediation Board on April 26 authorized a representation election for the 24,605 cabin crew, which will be a popularity contest between the AFA and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The flight attendants on the Continental side recently ratified a new contract with the IAM, which also represents Continental Micronesia.

The AFA stands to lose about 15,000 current members, or gain the 9,300 now with the IAM at Continental. The IAM also represents 270 at Continental Micronesia.

The AFA has been frustrated in its attempts to attract approximately 20,000 Delta dues-paying members in unsuccessful elections at that carrier. The IAM, incidentally, has lost elections to represent other groups of workers at Delta as well.
