Russian companies have "made the first dance moves" into MRO--and the "dance is on!" proclaimed Ian Ferguson, a senior manger at ICF SH&E two weeks ago at Aviation Week's MRO Regional conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. Transaero acquired Air Atlantic, Volga-Dnepr is expanding in Ulyanovsk, Aeroflot is building a 777 hangar at Sheremetyevo.
At the same time, many MROs in Eastern Europe and the Baltics are expanding their capacities--especially with next-gen aircraft, which parallels the fleet changes in the region. However, speakers pointed out engine MRO, including high-tech engine repairs, will likely stay with OEMs due to the volume and investment required--unless MROs partner with OEMs.
However, niche services such as cabin modifications, IFE upgrades and winglet installations are fair game--so except more MROs to move into niches such as these.
