Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is being lauded for mounting a very effective PR campaign in the wake of the Airbus A380 groundings. A Bloomberg story quotes a crisis management expert as saying Joyce’s public appearances are “a textbook example of how to handle the situation.”
I personally think this is correct – Joyce has been out in front of the public a lot, and has chosen to deliver most of the developments in person rather than via press releases. Here is the link to the full story – what do you think of Joyce’s response?
As noted in the story, on Nov. 26 Joyce will be aboard the first Qantas A380 to resume flights. He has conducted five press briefings and six radio and television interviews since the fleet was grounded on Nov. 4.
“From the start Joyce was on top of it,” one marketing expert says. He compares Joyce’s high profile to the tardy response of Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda, who initially let spokesmen handle press briefings as U.S. officials flayed the company over safety defects in its cars late last year and in early 2010.
