  • Airbus A320 Tops 7,000 Orders
Posted by Robert Wall 7:37 AM on Apr 27, 2011

Airbus has secured more than 7,000 orders for the A320 family now that International Lease Finance Corp.'s commitment for 100 of those aircraft has become a firm order.

When Airbus originally made the business case for the A320, it was built around selling around 600 of the aircraft.

The pace of A320 order intake in recent years has been impressive. In less than six years, the aircraft maker has added 3,000 aircraft to its single-aisle order book. It passed the 5,000 order mark in 2007 and a year later broke through 6,000 orders. The aircraft maker is due to deliver its 5,000th aircraft next year.

The ILFC deal is the second major order milestone Airbus is celebrating this year with an A320NEO deal -- it broke through the 10,000 order mark for all its products with Virgin America's decision to buy the aircraft.

In the more tactical Boeing vs Airbus order battle, the deal helps propel Airbus ahead of Boeing in terms of gross orders garnered so far this year.
