As I wrote in this AWIN subscriber-only story, the Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute is testing Honeywell's TPE331-12U engine on Antonov An-2 aircraft. (A press release issued by the institute earlier this year also mentions testing the engine in conjunction with a five-bladed HC-B5MP propeller manufactured by Piqua, Ohio-based Hartzell.) The An-2 biplanes were designed in the 1940s, but about 1,400 of them are still registered with Russia's civil aviation industry. The country's leaders would like to see the small turboprop updated as one option for helping to boost the country's struggling regional airline services. A six-minute YouTube video apparently posted by the institute in December 2011 shows the test aircraft taking off, flying and landing with the engine. A 19-second YouTube video posted in March shows the same aircraft but only on takeoff. The accompanying text within the video and underneath it is in Russian, but the translation notes a takeoff weight of 4,100 kg and a "run off" of 30 meters. It also says the institute wants to modernize the aircraft to make it more fuel efficient—using kerosene-type jet fuel instead of the gasoline-powered ASz-62IR engines currently on the aircraft—and lower its maintenance costs.
