While in Dubai for Aviation Week's MRO Middle East Conference & Exhibition, I had the opportunity to attend a Lufthansa press briefing to meet Karsten Zang, the airline's new UAE general manager and director for the Gulf, Afghanistan & Pakistan (pictured).

Zang and Carsten Schaeffer--Lufthansa's VP sales and services for Southeast Europe, Africa and the Middle East/Pakistan--met with local media for a Q&A.

Schaeffer says the Lufthansa group transported 1 million passengers in the Middle East last year, which is 10% more than 2012. The group has 40 flights to the region per week--and four per day to Dubai.

Lufthansa is working with Dubai to cut certain flights while the runways here are being repaired.

Did Etihad and Alitalia come up? Of course. Lufthansa feels it has a competitive disadvantage because of European regulations, "but it's interesting to see how Etihad approaches Europe," says Schaeffer.
