A Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F crashed at King Khaled InternationalAirport on landing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, destroying the aircraft.

Both pilots survived when the MD-11F carrying 80 tons of freight broke apart on landing and caught fire. The crew of LH8460 were taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia.

The freighter was arriving from Frankfurt, where it departed at 2:50 a.m. local time with a scheduled arrival at 9:20 a.m. local time.

The aircraft’s registration number is D-ALCQ.

It is a passenger to freighter conversion and part of Lufthansa Cargo’s fleet of 19 of the aircraft (with two in storage). Before its conversion into a freighter (completed in November 2004), the aircraft served in passenger carrying duty for Alitalia.

The MD-11 originally rolled off the production line in 1993.
