Flying Boeing 787

Ever wondered what tailored arrivals are but were afraid to ask? Boeing has released a pretty nifty video that gives a good explanation of these advanced procedures, describing the what, how and why. In the video, Boeing systems engineer Suzanne Hawkins says tailored arrivals can save 400-800lb of fuel per arrival, meaning obvious efficiency and emissions reduction benefits. Boeing likens the procedure to taking a ramp to get to the ground instead of stairs – i.e. a steady idle descent instead of traditional stepped approaches. It also reduces workloads for controllers and pilots. If you look at about the 2:20 mark on the video, there is a neat time-lapse of aircraft landing at a busy airport at night.
