American Airlines began A319 revenue service today, 56 days after taking delivery of its first one.

Aviation Week caught A319 N9002U departing Memphis today (see photo below) on its way back to Dallas/Ft. Worth, shortly after arriving on American's second-ever A319 revenue flight. American's first A319 revenue flight, performed by N93003, was from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Charlotte just hours earlier.

The new Airbuses are intended to help replace American's aging aircraft, primarily its MD-80s.

American Airlines last operated Airbuses in 2009 when it retired its fleet of A300-600Rs.
