Here is a gallery with some interesting pics of Air New Zealand’s new seating concept, from the New Zealand Herald website. (Some of the pics are from newspaper staff, some are supplied by the airline). There is also a link to a promo video. I have to say, I’m not entirely sure about the new couch/double bed concept for economy class. It looks like you can’t stretch your legs out without them extending into the aisle quite a way. I’ll be interested to see how this all works out in practice, and how popular the seats are (I’ll bet other carriers are watching pretty closely too). Basically, if two people purchase this option, you get three seats with a special fold-up section to give you a flat surface right up to the seat back in front of you. The New Zealand Herald has dubbed it “cuddle class.” The new seats will be in Air NZ’s new Boeing 777-300ERs, with the first to be delivered in November. The -300s will first be used on Auckland-Los Angeles flights from December. Other new features include a system allowing passengers to order food via touch screens.
