With engine material representing 60-70% of engine maintenance spend, it's not shocking that operators, MROs and OEMs carefully monitor material.

Ahmad Zamany, Copa Airline's VP technical operations, is a fan of PMA parts--including those for engines--as long as operators have a strong engineering department and robust processes. "Otherwise, stay away from PMAs and DER repairs," he advises.

Companies like HEICO can work with airlines to set up these processes, if they are interested, said an attendee at Aviation Week's MRO Latin America event last week in Brazil. Copa has done this.

Zamany "doesn't like monopolies" and believes in competition for engine material.

In jest, he added, "Engines are like elephants. They're the same price dead or alive. The value is in the ivory!"
