ALPA is calling on regulators to ban shipments of lithium batteries on airliners until regulations are in place "to ensure the safe transport of these hazardous materials." In a letter to Cynthia Douglass, acting deputy administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), ALPA cited three recent incidents in the last two months that were similar to a 2006 fire aboard a UPS DC-8 in Philadelphia -- an event that led NTSB to recommend that FAA take a close look the risks involved with shipping lithium battiers.
