  • ALPA: Ban Lithium Battery Shipments Until Regs Are Stiffened
Posted by Sean Broderick 6:12 PM on Aug 25, 2009

ALPA is calling on regulators to ban shipments of lithium batteries on airliners until regulations are in place "to ensure the safe transport of these hazardous materials."

In a letter to Cynthia Douglass, acting deputy administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), ALPA cited three recent incidents in the last two months that were similar to a 2006 fire aboard a UPS DC-8 in Philadelphia -- an event that led NTSB to recommend that FAA take a close look the risks involved with shipping lithium battiers.
