I contacted the FAA today to see how the lack of funding for the agency will affect projects such as STC approvals. The good news is that FAA spokesman Les Dorr says the budget impasse will not affect the Aircraft Certification Office's ability to issue them.
Overhaul & Maintenance readers know, however, that all of the short-term funding extensions for the agency have impacted FAA's certification services for quite a while. The aircraft certification service has reigned in costs, hiring and non-essential travel for months and months, and it sequences certification projects--with safety applications receiving priority.
With a possible government shutdown looming, don't expect the pace to pick up.
