During his commute, (fictitious) Atlanta aircraft maintenance exec Greg is tailgated by a motorcycle-riding sleep specialist who brings his attention to a couple of problems.
FAA's new video "Grounded" addresses a couple of common problems:
- Sleep deficit
- Lack of exercise
- Poor diet
- Cell phone distractions
- AOGs situations
- Replacement parts delays
- Shift work
- The usual scenario: 1138 flights per day
It also tackles some common misperceptions:
- "We'll sleep when we're dead"
- "They can sleep on the weekend"
If there's one axiom the video does hold true, it's this one: time is money. In this case, time spent sleeping is money. As our sleep expert points out, "If sleep were money, you'd be bankrupt by now."
Fatigue can lead to worse problems than burnt toast. As Greg's wife points out, when you're tired, you don't follow procedures. That can heighten the risk of fatigue-related errors at work, too.
Check out FAA's online fatigue management toolbox for more information on how to mitigate fatigue.
