After an absence, the topic of PMA parts returned to our MRO Asia Conference today. The subject has pushed past the "bogus parts" argument and has moved to "alternative parts" and "alternative mateial." In fact, Frederick Groth, COO of Interglobe Aviation, drew laughs when he asked, "Can we just get rid of the PMA name?"Rick Stine, SVP technical operations for HEICO Aerospace, laughed and said he would go for it because HEICO doesn't use the term--but he explained that the PMA moniker just stuck in the industry. What do you think? Is most of the industry using the term "alternative parts" now that many airworthiness authorities around the world recognize them? Pratt & Whitney's Robert Esteve, CFM56 program manager, pointed out that a "vast" majority (more than half) of an engine overhaul cost goes to material, so giving customers options is crucial.
