The reluctance of some, but not all, OEMs to share data with third-party MROs has been a frequent topic of discussion here at Aviation Week's MRO Americas in Dallas, but often those conversations are very general in nature. This morning, however, George Silverman, VP materiel at FedEx Express, offered a very specific, real-time example.According to Silverman, a handful of elevators from the carrier's fleet of more than 100 Airbus A300 and A310 freighers were damaged by hail connected to the tornadoes that struck the Dallas area yesterday. Those structures, he says, will have to be sent to Spain for repair because the data to make the repairs is not available to pass on to repair facilities in the U.S. Because it will take 9-12 months to get the repaired structures back, FedEx probably will have to buy spares in the open market, thus increasing its costs even more, Silverman says.
