Lion Air generated a lot of interest when it signed a $22.4 billion deal for Boeing 737s this week and then followed it up with a $610 million contract with ATR for additional 27 ATR 72-600s. The latest contract will make Lion Air the largest ATR operator in the world. I think it's interesting that the Asia-Pacific region represents more than 40% of total ATR sales since 2005, according to the manufacturer.Aviation Week reported on Dec. 29 that Lion Air plans to open a maintenance facility on Batam in the third quarter. Based on this week's orders, it sounds like there certainly will be an aircraft pipeline to support it.Photo credit: ATR
