The NTSB is recommending that the FAA issue a statement to private aircraft owners to inspect emergency locator transmitters to ensure that the devices won't become dislodged and damaged to the point of failure in the event of a crash. The request is in response to the challenges that agents had at the Alaskan crash site of former Senator Ted Steven’s plane in August. It took the team almost five hours to locate the nonfunctioning transmitter. It was found a mere 19 miles from where the Senator’s plane took off.
