  • Lufthansa purchase of BMI cements, but doesn't expand technical cooperation
Posted by Robert Wall 12:30 PM on Sep 24, 2009

The purchase of BMI by Lufthansa is not expected to have much of an impact on BMI's technical organization, Jason Mahoney, director of engineering for the airline.
BMI and Lufthansa Technik already have a close working relationship, he notes, with the German MRO provider performing all C-Checks for BMI. And the two have been working for some time to see how they can further cooperate. The ownership change has not led to any further impetus being given to expand the relationship.
Meanwhile, BMI is looking to modernize its engineering activities, though. Mahoney says a "significant investment" in a new information technology system is planned. The current IT infrastructure does not fully integrate different parts of the business. So despite the economic downturn, BMI is pressing ahead with plans to upgrade its IT backbone, with negotiations now underway. The goal is to have the new system in place in the next two years or so.
