A United spokesperson confirmed this morning a Reuters report that the airline plans to lay off 414 mechanics at its San Francisco maintenance base. The layoffs are part of a previously staff reduction plan that will see 7,000 positions eliminated. In a statement, the airline said: As we reduce the size of our fleet and take actions company-wide to enable United to compete in this challenging economic environment, we must take the difficult but necessary step to reduce the number of people we have to run our business.
