The Austrian headquarters of Diamond invited guests to a surprise viewing of a twin-engine version of the DA50 just before Christmas 2011 and the prototype first flew on April 3 this year. Initially, it is powered by 178 hp. Austro Engine E4 (AE300E) Diesels, while the production version will have 276 hp. AE500s...when they are developed and certified. These engines would seem to be the determining factor in the DA52’s production timetable. Nothing has been said of Avgas-fuelled alternative engines. Marketing is due to begin in July 2013, the U.S. being offered a version with 4,740 lb. MTOW, Europe, one slightly lighter. Optional fly-by-wire controls will be available from 2014. Though based on the DA50 – which still has not been certified – the twin adds an extra two seats for a total of seven, or six plus baggage in business configuration. Cost will be $900,000 for the basic aircraft, $1.025 million with typical options. Standard avionics are Garmin G1000 three-screen. Estimates for performance include 197 kt. cruise, 18,000 ft. ceiling and range of 1,240 nm.
