To get FAA approval for human to ride the hoist beneath of hovering helicopter, the OEM must demonstrate loss of engine, and that's what makes the requirement so tough, according to Sikorsky's Jeff Pino. "When you lose one engine, you have to demonstrate that you won't drop more than a few inches before the pilot recognizes the situation and initiates a recovery." That's not so much a tough requirement for the helicopter as it is for the certification test pilot.
