Germany is deploying two fast patrol boats to augment the U.N.’s naval force off Lebanon. The S72 Puma and S75 Zobel have now arrived in Cyprus from their home base in Warnemunde. The boats' agility makes them particularly useful in the U.N. operation, called UNIFIL, says Fleet Adm. Christian Lother, commander of the peace-keeping mission. The Puma and Zobel are to monitor the coastal area, stop weapons smuggling and to exercise with Lebanese naval units to strengthen ties.

Both vessels belong to the Gepard-Class. The 57.6 meter long, 391 metric ton displacement ships have a top speed of up to 40 knots. They are armed with one 76 mm OTO-Melara Geschütz gun, four anti-ship MM38 Exocet missiles, one Rolling Airframe Missile launching system with 21 tubes, and the ability to deploy mines. Germany also has a frigate, two mine-clearing vessels and a supply ship deployed as part of the 13 ship U.N. detachment.
