  • Super Hornet-UAV Marriage To Come?

Fighter upgrade plans tend to change a lot, but Boeing has today provided an update on some of its thinking.

One issue on the roadmap, or "flight plan" as Boeing calls it, is for UAV carriage and launch capability. Mike Gibbons, the company program manager says that a ScanEagle-like UAV would be what is envisioned.

However, the timeline is not near-term. Gibbons believes such a feature might emerge around 2020.

There are other ideas being looked at, including providing missile warnings functionality. Whether that would be through an infrared sensor or radar-based sensor is not determined, and would be left to the Navy to decide.

There's much else being thought of, but in some cases customers have not fully spelled out what they want when.
