Airbus Military has now flown the first KC-30 for yet another customer, the United Arab Emirates. (Photo: Airbus Military. For the winglet reference in the headline, click here)The UAE is buying three tankers (so far, there is talk of more). The first aircraft is due for delivery next year, but should already go to the UAE this year for flight testing. The UAE's air force is the fourth customer for the A330-based Multirole Tanker Transport to see its aircraft fly, following Australia, the U.K., and Saudi Arabia. Paperwork issues continue to stall first customer delivery, although the Royal Australian Air Force is now expecting the handover to occur next month. The UAE tanker's first flight lasted almost 3 hours (5 min. less actually) and took place April 9 at Airbus Military's facility outside Madrid. The manufacturer points out that as the first tanker to also be able to receive fuel that is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, some extra certification work is required.
