Now that the debt deal is settled and the super committee’s members have been named, it’s time for that long-held August recess tradition – the congressional delegation.It’s not all fun, lawmakers assure taxpayers – it’s educational.So starting Aug. 13, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) leading the largest-ever “codel” to Israel with 56 Republican members visiting in two waves until Aug. 28 to learn more about Israel’s “role in national security,” according to a statement from Cantor’s office.This year, Congress has been overwhelmingly supportive of efforts to help Israel develop three key missile defense systems – Arrow, Iron Dome and David’s Sling – both in terms of providing additional cash and in terms of policy shifts. Cantor’s statement says the American Israel Education Foundation, “an independent, nonprofit charitable organization,” organized the trip. The group is affiliated with the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC).
