Jean-Yves Le Drian, nearly 65, has been appointed as France's new defense minister. A stalwart member of the Socialist Party and close friend of President François Hollande, Le Drian has a very limited experience of government: just one year between 1991-92 when he was minister of state for maritime affairs. The sea is an environment he is familiar with. He was born in Lorient, a major military port and shipbuilding center in northwestern France which he was also mayor of for 17 years (1981-1998). He was deputy of the region of Morbihan in Britanny from 1978 to 2007 almost continuously (apart from between 1991-97) and during this period was a member of the parliamentary defense commission. He will most likely have to resign his current chairmanship of the regional council of Britanny. Le Drian was the man Hollande turned to during the presidential campaign to prepare a new defense policy for France. What that will be remains to be seen.
