  • First Luftwaffe MANTIS Firing
Posted by Nicholas Fiorenza 8:49 AM on Oct 01, 2012

The Bundeswehr conducted its first firing under its own responsibility of its Modular, Automatic and Network capable Targeting and Interception System (MANTIS) counter-rocket, artillery and mortar system last month. The Sept. 5 firing at the Todendorf/Panker training area on the Baltic shot down six target drones launched in rapid succession by larger mother drones.

Previous test firings were conducted by supplier Rheinmetall and Bundeswehr testing and evaluation facilities. In mid-August, the Luftwaffe's Flak Group (FlaGrp) conducted target determination of drones at its home base in Hussum without firing MANTIS.

The system's 35 mm guns can fire up to 1,000 rounds a minute.

The Bundeswehr has produced two videos showing the MANTIS deployment to and firing in Todendorf. Plans to deploy MANTIS to Afghanistan have been cancelled.
