Embraer has handed over the first of three EMB-145 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to India, for installation of the mission system, after the completion of ground and flight tests of the modified platform in Brazil. The report quotes Defense Minister Naveed Qamar as saying the aircraft was hit by either bullets or grenade fragments and, after initial repair, will be returned to Sweden for inspection. India's first EMB-145 AEW&C was rolled out at Embraer in February 2011 and first flew in December. The regional jet is heavily modified to carry the Indian-developed mission system, with inflight refueling probe, satcom antenna, increased electrical and cooling capacity, and structural provision for the AEW&C system, including the active-array antenna mounted above the fuselage. The aircraft will be delivered to the Center for Airborne Systems, part of India's Defense Research and Development Organization, for integration of the indigenously developed mission system. The EMB-145 AEW&Cs will then be delivered to the Indian air force for use as both testbeds and gapfillers between its Il-76-based, Israeli-modified Beriev A-50EI Phalcon AEW&C platforms.
