The British public can sleep soundly in their beds safe in the knowledge that the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyer will be invulnerable to crazed golfers, or errant shots from the first tee.

This reassuring piece of information surfaced – perhaps somewhat surprisingly – during a parliamentary debate on defense procurement April 20.

Commenting on the capabilities of the first of class, HMS Daring, now in the process of being introduced into service, Conservative member of parliament Nicholas Soames noted: “The Daring class radars are some of the most sophisticated and powerful in the world; they can enable a golf ball to be shot down at 700 miles or something.”

He went on to add: “That is terribly useful, but it will not be necessary,” but sadly did not fully explore exactly why this was so.
