The Dutch Defense Materiel Organisation handed over the first eight fast raiding interception and special forces craft (FRISC) to the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) today. The British company Maritime Specialised Technology is delivering a total of 48 FRISCs to the Netherlands. Dutch Ministry of Defense photo The FRISC will be used for counterterrorism, counterpiracy and counternarcotics missions, operating from the RNN's four new patrol vessels or in coordination with the support ship Hr. Ms. Pelikaan in the Caribbean in coast guard, territorial defense and amphibious landing operations. The fast boat has a top speed of 40 knots and can operate at long ranges. Its crew consists of a pilot and navigator and it can carry up to eight passengers. The navigator is also the radio operator. The RNN has developed new procedures for operating the FRISC in all operational and weather conditions. FRISCs will soon be used for boardings and protecting shipping during the counterpiracy deployment of the landing ship dock Hr. Ms. Rotterdam off the coast of Somalia later this year. For this mission, the FRISC will be fitted with added ballistic protection and heavy weapons. The Dutch Ministry of Defense has produced a video of FRISC trials.
