The Belgian air force's 40 Helicopter Squadron organized an international search and rescue (SAR) meet this week.
Six NATO countries sent helicopters: SA330 Pumas of the French air force's Escadrille 1/67 Pyrénées and Spanish air force's 801 Squadron, an Agusta-Bell 412 of the Royal Netherlands Air Force's 303 Squadron, a Sea King Mk41 of Germany's Marinefliegergeschwader 5, an Mi-8RL of the Polish air force's 2nd Transport and Liaision Squadron and a Sikorsky HH-3F of the Italian air force's 83° Centro. Their Belgian hosts were equipped with Sea King. British participation was cancelled because of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland.
The competition was won by the French, with Germany in second place. Competitors were judged on navigation, survival, agility, cohesion and the precision of their winching.
The Belgian air force produced a video of the event.
