  • AeroVironment Unveils VTOL Shrike
Posted by Graham Warwick 4:12 PM on Aug 30, 2011

A flyer hastily removed from a table outside the press briefing room at the AUVSI show in Washington earlier this month was the first sign AeroVironment had a new small unmanned aircraft up its sleeve. Now the company best known for the hand-launched Raven has unveiled the Shrike, a quadrotor vertical take-off and landing small UAV.

The 5lb, backpackable Shrike is the result of four years' work under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's tightly cloaked Stealth Persistent Perch and Stare (SP2S) program. The battery-powered UAV can hover for 40 minutes carrying a high-resolution camera, but can provide several hours of video by perching and staring.
