On the way to join Operation Atalanta, the Hamburg will participate in two multinational air defense exercises in the Mediterranean until the middle of November: Rapid Arrow 2010 and Joint Air Defense Operations Center. After all, air defense was the main mission the Sachsen class was designed for.
The 250 personnel on board the Hamburg include a mobile protection element to defend the frigate against threats such as speedboats and a 10-strong vessel protection detachment will be able to deploy on to freight vessels with dinghies or the two Sea Lynx helicopters supporting the Hamburg.
