The Pentagon has awarded Bell Helicopter Textron an initial $60 million contract to provide the Iraqi air force with attack helicopters.
The deal, awarded April 27, covers 24 Bell 407s. Moreover, the contract includes an option for 26 more of the rotorcraft. U.S. officials had indicated previously that the Iraqi air force eventually would like to field 50 of the helos.
The Pentagon says the contract will run an initial 27 months, with 13 more months required to cover the options.
The helos are powered by Rolls Royce 250-C-30 Engines, and would feature M280 2.75-inch rocket launchers, M296 .50 Cal. machine guns and M299 Hellfire missile launchers, the Pentagon said when it submitted the foreign military sales request to Congress.
