Today is Northrop Grumman's last official day as a shipbuilder for the U.S. Navy. That work is now the responsibility of spinoff Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), made up of Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding.

The key to making this work for HII will be to turn around its Gulf operations. It appears to be on the right track to do so, but if it doesn't do that fairly quickly, don't be surprised to see Newport News and Ingalls go their separate ways in years ahead.
