Italian air force Typhoons have begun providing air policing for Albania, pipping Germany to the post to be the first Eurofighter nation to commit the aircraft in this role.

The German air force will take its aircraft to Siauliai air base, Lithuania, in September for the Baltic air policing task.

Italian Typhoons from the 36th Wing based at Gioia del Colle are tasked with the Albanian air policing role under a NATO requirement. Albania’s small air force is not equipped to carry out this task. Albania became an alliance member at the beginning of April this year.
