Germany is prepared to export 200 Leopard 2A7+ tanks to Saudi Arabia, the German news weekly Spiegel reports.

According to the magazine, Saudi Arabia first negotiated with General Dynamics Land Systems' Spanish subsidiary, Santa Barbara, which produces the Leopard 2 under license, before Germany agreed to deliver most of the tanks, which the Saudis reportedly want to buy new, not used. Spiegel also claims the sale is no longer considered a threat by Israel.

The reported sale has been criticized by German parliamentarians across party lines. One of the arguments of critics against a possible sale is the recent Saudi intervention to put down protests in neighboring Bahrain.
