Japan and India have committed to an action plan that will enhance defense cooperation in areas including maritime security and counter-terrorism. Indian Defense Minister AK Antony and his Japanese counterpart Toshimi Kitazawa made the decision after a comprehensive review of their defense ties at a meeting this week in Tokyo.

Indian press reports said the two countries would also hold joint military exercises and would cooperate both bilaterally and regionally in peacekeeping, disaster relief and the ASEAN Regional Forum.

Antony was accompanied to Japan by a high-ranking retinue of Indian officials, including Defense Secretary Pradeep Kumar, Defense Ministry scientific adviser VK Saraswat and the Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral DK Dewan.
