    Aviation Week Naval Editor Mike Fabey says it best and most succinctly in the lead paragraph of his major investigative piece.

    The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS-1) USS Freedom is plagued by extensive corrosion and manufacturing issues more recent and serious than anything the Pentagon or prime contractor Lockheed Martin has publicly acknowledged thus far.

    True, problems with LCS-1 -- indeed the whole program -- have been regular fodder for defense journalists for years. But only Aviation Week got aboard the lead ship of Lockheed's half of the unprecedented program to get a guided, exclusive tour -- and you can see from the photos what Mike saw himself and then talked with experts about.
