The Royal Thai Air Force Gripen fleet is due to become operational next month. (Photo: Saab)In advance of the milestone, the first of the fighters have now arrived at their new base in southern Thailand, at Surat Thani where Wing 7 is located.Thailand last year doubled its order for Gripens to 12 aircraft. The air force has had pilots and maintenance personnel in Sweden for some time to get ready for the service inductions. Further fleet growth is not being ruled out, but probably will not happen immediately.Thailand also is buying a Saab 340-based Erieye airborne early warning and control system from Sweden.
